The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has significantly advanced access to various drug therapies, including new designations for cancer treatments and an accepted application for smoking cessation. Concurrently, an executive order from former President Trump aims to loosen restrictions on psychedelic drugs, potentially accelerating their widespread therapeutic access and research.

JKN Global News Desk — Former President Trump recently signed an executive order designed to loosen restrictions on psychedelic drugs, potentially accelerating widespread access to these therapies. This executive action could position states like Texas as leaders in psychedelics research, with the state committing $50 million and receiving backing from figures such as Rick Perry to advance studies in the field.

Simultaneously, the FDA has made significant strides in drug development, notably expanding access to a pancreatic cancer drug, exemplified by patients like Ben Sasse. Daraxonrasib, a pancreatic cancer treatment, also earned Orphan Drug Designation from the agency. AstraZeneca's Datroway received Priority Review in the U.S. as a first-line treatment for patients with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer who are not candidates for immunotherapy.

The agency further granted Fast Track Designation to pasritamig and TRE-515 with 177Lu-PSMA-617 for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). In acute myeloid leukemia (AML), Annamycin showed encouraging early results in a Phase 2/3 clinical trial, while ICT01 combined with venetoclax/azacitidine received Breakthrough Status from the FDA. The FDA also accepted a New Drug Application for Cytisinicline for smoking cessation and granted Fast Track Designation to a drug candidate for celiac disease.

Beyond human pharmaceuticals, the FDA granted full approval to verdinexor tablets for canine lymphoma, expanding treatment options in veterinary medicine. Meanwhile, the National Institute on Aging continues to track advancements in Alzheimer's disease research, with the 2025 NIH Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias Research Progress Report highlighting ongoing achievements, even as new blood tests for Alzheimer's present both promise and challenges.
