A deadly cluster of hantavirus cases, resulting in three fatalities, has been reported on an Atlantic cruise vessel, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to issue a global health advisory. The unusual outbreak has led to warnings from health watchdogs across multiple countries, emphasizing multi-country travel implications.
JKN Global News Desk – At least three individuals have died, and seven cases of hantavirus have been identified aboard an Atlantic cruise ship, according to reports citing the WHO and various international news outlets. This cluster marks a concerning development given the typical transmission routes of the virus.
The World Health Organization has issued a Disease Outbreak News (DON) update and a global risk advisory, highlighting the multi-country travel aspect linked to the outbreak. Health authorities in Vietnam and Singapore have also issued specific warnings and alerts following the confirmed cluster.
Experts from institutions like The New York Academy of Sciences note that hantavirus presence on a cruise ship is considered highly unusual, as the virus typically spreads to humans through contact with rodent droppings, urine, or saliva, primarily in rural settings. Passengers onboard have reportedly shared emotional appeals and tearful videos detailing terrifying symptoms and a chaotic environment. At least two Irish citizens have been confirmed among those impacted. The cruise vessel itself has been described as stranded amidst the unfolding health crisis, with cases of hantavirus reported onboard.
